WHO: My name is AJ Fusco, I'm 26 years old.

WHERE: I live in Columbus, Ohio, where I'm from. I just moved back here after living in Chicago and New York for the past 8 years.

HOW: Manipulating graphite, ink, and digital information.

WHAT: Abstract images that incorporate visual phenomena of the natural world, anatomical and biological structures as points of reference to create a credible illusory space that is nonetheless inexplicit and nebulous. I am interested in the way inaccuracies and malfunctions of our visual sense inform our perception of the world, and in exploiting these weaknesses.

My digital work addresses the same concerns by aestheticizing digital corruption and artifacts in found images, drawing an analogy between glitches in digital files and the imperfection of human consciousness: the way our representation of the world is formed through the lossy compression techniques employed by our sense organs.

WHEN/WHY: I've been drawing and making things since I was a little kid, it's a compulsion.

Mr. Fusco is on top of shit, no doubt.

Hunter and Cook is a quarterly magazine and gallery here in Toronto. I have been reading through everything in this issue for the last few weeks. There's a lot in there.

Saying it's a magazine is sort of an understatement considering how big and nicely printed it is. These are just some of my favorite pages, there is a whole lot more in this thing.

Who: My name is Erik Osberg. I was born in Vancouver in 1983 and was raised in
Victoria, B.C. I received two BFA's, in film production and photography, from Concordia University in Montreal.

What: I mostly take pictures, but my practice also includes making films and videos. The series in question is an ongoing set of images that I have worked on steadily for the last two and a half years.

When: I started taking pictures in 2003 with a 35mm Pentax Spotmatic. Then I
learned of medium format and bought a Kalimar Six/Sixty. Concurrently, I had become interested in motion picture and had bought a Nikon R10 super to shoot rolls of super 8mm. At the time I was going to the University of Victoria and decided that I wanted to be an artist, so I transferred to Concordia and started art school in 2005.

Where: This series contains pictures taken in a few locations in Canada. I carry my camera with me if I travel, but don’t tend to take very many pictures. My partner is Turkish and I have visited there a couple of times and taken pictures in the town that she is from, but at this point consider those images a different set of work. I think this series could handle images taken anywhere and that eventually the Turkish pictures could find inclusion, but without a very particular balance, including signifiers from other cultures may generate a sloppy dualism.

Why: I think photography and writing are very similar, in so far as their various forms and traditions are simultaneously concrete and elastic. There are people who make genre-based work: romance, sci-fi, biography, portrait, landscape, journalism, etc. And there is an audience of people who expect these genres, as well (imagine yourself working in a used bookstore being barked at about the whereabouts of How the Scots Invented the Modern World, or going to your parent’s friends house who have a framed poster of the Avedon picture of the woman and the elephants). But there are also people who have ideas and proceed to work them out using one of the numerous known forms available, or an amalgam of various forms. All this to say that contemporary cultural production may be presented in a relatively unlikely package, which is probably pretty obvious. I have ideas that I want to make public and I work them out most commonly with pictures.

How: Usually I take pictures using a 4x5 camera, since I tend to make large prints. Upon exposing and developing, I scan the film and work digitally thereafter.

Erik doesn't have a website yet, but the internet sucks anyways so don't worry about it.

Why: It is not always about the exact idea. My aim is to show what I really want to show, objects that impress me, the way I feel about smth or any person I meet.

How: Mental pictures. The image comes to my head and I project it to paper.

Two Shawn Kuruneru zines

Shawn Kuruneru is an artist from southern Ontario, Canada. We went to the same high school years ago. Since then, he's made a lot of great work and showed it across Canada and the USA. He sent me these two zines.

The first zine is called Shadowboxing.
I really love Shawn's drawings. These photos don't exactly do the contrast justice. They feel really, really heavy and intimate.

The centerfold is my favorite.

There is more figurative work in the Upside Down Girl zine than in the other one. All really nice pen and ink drawings. One time Shawn got a bottle smashed over his head by some thugs. The suburbs are hard.

January 20th marks Blood of the Young's 1st anniversary. I want to thank everyone who has been supportive and helpful and gotten involved over the last year. It means so much to me! I never expected the positive response this has gotten and I hope that the next year only brings better things.

To celebrate we are going to give free copies of Dimitri Karakostas and I's new zine, Who Cares, or the new issue of Society Suckers to 5 people who comment with a good joke. Winners will be contacted Monday morning.

Patrick Moore's Gemini

Patrick Moore is from Toronto. He was nice enough to send over the first two issues of his Gemini zine. Check them out.

Both of these zines are nicely put together and not poorly printed.

Issue one contains picturess taken in Fall of '09, a photo story called Hoods In America and tattoo stories with Jay Pepito of Reign Supreme and Billy Hamilton of Silverstein.

Issue two has photos from Winter '09, a series from New York City, a series about music, and a series about drugs, money, sex, and violence. Lots of good portraits in these zines.

What is your interest in peoples' favorites as opposed to the rest of their work?
Peoples' portfolios are often too much influenced by the wrong interests. A lot of photographers try to be hip, trendy and arty. They see the contemporary photography out there and think that that's how you do it. They only present work that is similar to what they already saw somebody else do, which makes it all so freaking boring and predictable. Take portraits from behind as an example. Some people did and it turned out great. That would have been the right time to do something different, but what does everybody else do? Take portraits from behind. There is a fucking shitload of portraits from behind on flickr alone, some are better than the first ones, but come on. Same thing with triangles, neo-occultism and shit. Honest favorites are not influenced by that. They're more authentic and tell you much more about the person who took them.

You choose to feature students and young artists along side professionals. What do you hope to achieve by doing this?
I do this because having a favorite photograph has nothing to do with the role of photography in your life and/or your skills. There are a lot of different aspects, meanings and perspectives in photography and a commercial career is only one.

I can see that you also take some really great photographs. How do you think making Romka has affected your personal work?
Thanks man. I think Romka helped me to stop taking everything so seriously and to try out a bit more. I used to think that every picture I take should be good enough to make it into my portfolio, which has been just wrong and a huge waste of time.

What are you working on right now? Anything coming up?
I'm working on a kick ass state of the art booklet full of mind-blowing photographic awesomeness with my friend and fellow student Andy. It's called "A man sat alone in his room" and will be available in a few months. Do anything wild in Germany lately? I've never been there but I have seen that X-Rated Rammstein music video, so it's a little hard to judge the place haha.
I always get the impression that Rammstein is popular everywhere but in Germany. When I think about it, nobody ever mentions them but foreigners..just like David Hasselhoff, the other way around. The music video was pretty rad, though. How's Canada? All I know is that you people never lock your front doors. Oh, and Buck 65.
Don't worry man, Rammstein isn't actually popular anywhere. People in North America just think they're funny. Canada's good though and I totally lock my door.

I've been keeping an eye on the Teen Witch for a while now. She's got me under her spell without a doubt.

Who: My friends know me as Teen Witch.

What: I have the best friends. Shit gets weird.

When: All the time. I've always got a spare roll just in case. You have to be prepared. When I don't get the shot I want, I get really bummed out. Just recently it was my best girl's birthday. We all went to this local bar we party at and a some of us girls ended up giving her topless lapdances on the dance floor. It was wild. A bunch of pictures were taken that I knew were going to be pure gold but later on we somehow lost the roll and its been hard to accept the fact that I will never see how the pictures would have turned out. Major buzzkill.

Where: San Francisco. I love taking trips to switch things up a bit, but I will always call this place my home.

Why: I kinda just stumbled into it and before I knew it I was addicted to getting rolls developed. I bought a camera and started bringing it around more and more. I do it because it's fun.

How: We don't need much to have a good time.

The people at My Dance The Skull from London just put out this great zine of work by Aleksandra Waliszewska. I don't really know much about either of them, but I definitely recommend checking out Aleksandra's work.

First of all, I should apologize because I think I've dropped my digital camera one too many times and so some of the pictures aren't that great. Just buy the zine and you can look at it any time you want. Aleksandra's work isn't mom friendly by any means, but I really, really like it.

Numbered edition of 250, 20 pages full colour on nice paper.
