Fuego #1

I just got this in the mailbox. Fuego #1. This thing is just too nice for words... if you like UFO's. I know Rachel Waugh likes UFOs, so I thought I'd post it now.

And I for one really like UFO's. Fuego is put together in Barcelona by Coke Bartrina and Elena Gallen. 40 pages full of great stuff. I really don't have much else to say, this zine is beautiful.

Coke's dad was part of a team who faked UFO footage in the 70's, so he decided to go to the spot of a famous UFO sighting and use his Father's ideas to make his own images. Too fucking cool.

Toronto dude Liam Crockard got the centerfold.

Read up about Bob Lazar. He hung out with aliens at Area 51.

Some Keaton Henson goodness.

A few words with Rachel Waugh

What are your plans for the day?
Sip tea and strike up conversation with my insecurities

What do you hate (dislike) most about your work?

Uuuugh.

Describe your relationship with one subject of one photo, sensual or non.
HERE, PHOTO HERE

Deanna and Fred, my current photographic muses. Fred is clawless and fairly tolerant. Deanna once said that her cat uses the city similar to how a shark might use a seal

Critisize something about Toronto, the land of all hate and evil

It's too flat.

What are your subjective standards in what makes a good photograph?

Whoa, big question. A few things I’m attracted to when making/viewing photographs:

engaging mood, aesthetic or concept
honest intent
several points of interest
analog qualities
a sense of ambiguity or mystery

…spare the high-brow rhetoric.

This Toronto gurrrrrrl has a serious jones for TRUTH and BEAUTY!!! FLICKR YALL!!!

Jackson Eaton 'Interview'

The other day I sent Australian photographer Jackson Eaton a few questions. He sent his answers back to us in the form of Polaroids. Dig it.

What are your plans for the day?

What's something you find that you are not photographing? Is that on purpose?

You just had some photos in the Night Vision show in Vancouver. Tell me about that.

I am 22 and feel old. How does it feel be to born in 1980 at the end of 2009?

What was the last really good movie or record you got?

If this didn't make any sense to you or if you just plain want to see more of Jackson's photos, go to Jackson Eaton dot com.

Alison Scarpulla

Very rarely do I find a photographer that genuinely interests me. I feel so very compelled to do a full post on this woman, but as for right now I cannot keep these images to myself. Jawdropping work. Proper use of film. Fantastic.

The Unknown Portraits / Bad Boy Racing Club

I got Kozyndan's beautiful new book, The Unknown Portraits, out through Toronto's Magic Pony as well as Bad Boy Racing Club #1. Here are some pictures from them.

I am going to say upfront that these pictures don't do this book justice at all. It showed up as a surprise from Magic Pony (thanks so much!!) a couple of weeks back and everyone that has seen it at my house instantly gets sucked in. It has a super soft fabric cover with gold embossing and the 100+ illustrations in it are awesome. Easily worth the $25 they want for it.

Kozyndan's drawings are based on pictures found in a thrift store photo album. Some of them are accompanied by short stories written by their friends, like the one above called There's A Party In My Pants that Porous Walker wrote.

I really like this book. The work has enough depth to keep you flipping through it continuously. There are some photos from the book launch and also some good images of some of the illustrations on Magic Pony's flickr. You can get the book here.

I don't know a whole lot about Bad Boy Racing Club. Its got black and white photos by a handful of people and Issue 1 is thick and full of good content.

More photos and knowledge about getting your hands on one at the Bad Boy Racing Club website.

No Thoughts zines for free

Michael J. Demeo mailed over the new zines he and Alyssa Noches have out for free through their Portland based project - We Are Now In Space. There are still copies of issue 2 available, go to the website and they will mail you one.

Issue one contains photos by Michael Demeo. It's full of some good nudie pictures, but isn't available anymore. You guys slept on this one.

Issue two has photos from Demeo again as well as Alyssa Noches. The theme seems to be the same, but this time with little 'No Thoughts 2' logos scattered through out. I'm not sure why they're there.. probably so that when I post this it'll get drilled into your brain over and over again.

Get yours on the We Are Now In Space site.

Luke Ramsey

Booooooom just posted a great interview with Luke Ramsey in preparation for the Tangents show opening Friday in Vancouver. Luke is a great artist and inspiration with a lot of good things to say. It's a good read.

Luke also runs the Islands Fold artist residency and basically zine factory over on Pender Island, B.C. So many good things going on.

I wake up to this one every morning.

More on lukeramsey.blogspot.com, but go to the show Friday if you can. The internet does not do these works justice.

Nowhere Fast Zine

I got both issues of Nowhere Fast a while ago. I really, really like both of these zines and even though they're sold out I thought I would post a selection of images from them anyways.

Nowhere Fast is put together by Wesley Robert (see our interview). Its a B&W photo journal featuring 10-20 photographers per issue. It feels nice and substantial in your hand, not like some of the flimsy crap that comes through my mailbox.

Issue 2 didn't have a nice heavy chrome cover like the first one did.

I can't wait for #3.

An Interview with Katya Ford

Katya Ford lives in Moscow and has a really strange blog of photographs. I finally got around to asking some questions about her work.

Your photographs seem to work more in pairs or groups rather than just individual images, would you agree?

Yes, I think so. Most of my photographs are senseless. They're just capturing the moments of my life and nothing more. I like using different cameras, trying different effects and sizes. Some kind of a mess is really what I like. But I wish I could organize myself and do something "smarter."

Most of your work seems to have really dark undertones, is that intentional?

Haha, no! I don't know how I do this actually. If someone uses my camera the colours are very bright and saturated. Perhaps it's something inside me and everything I do contains this darkness. But I'm satisfied though.

Are you into horses? They seriously freak me out, I cannot handle that shit.

I'm into cats as well.

Do you think living in Moscow or Russia in general has any influence
on your photographs? Is that a stupid question?

That is a hard question. It would be stupid saying that the place that you live in doesn't have any influences on your work. I'm always inspired by the environment, no matter where I am. But I like everything new. Actually I can't live without having new emotions and experiences. I know that I can do more things and do them better and I hope that I can do something I can't even imagine.

This series of photographs is probably my favorite on your blog:

Can you talk about it a little bit?

That was the period of time when I wanted to shoot everything with a big zoom and it was only an experiment. I was shooting welders from my window, while they were working. I was fascinating by the sparks.

Any last words of wisdom?

Too many words for me already.

Check out 66kf, Katya Ford is on to some next level shit!

Booooooom/Lifetime - Tangents

Booooooom is having it's first group show next Friday, Nov. 13/09 at the Lifetime Collective space in Vancouver. I don't feel like linking all of the other info so read the flyer below or read the artist interviews that have been going up on booooooom. Ben Tour is great and gave me a beer once. Luke Ramsey's stuff has continually blown my mind for ages now. You're an idiot if you don't go to this show.

Wham City @ DeLeon White
